Permian Basin and SE New Mexico

Extreme heat days, drought and blowing dust most of the year. When storms do come they can bring large hail, damaging wind and flash flooding on caliche roads and draws, and winter freezes cause freeze-offs (Winter Storm Uri shut in much of the basin in February 2021).

About site risk
  • Levels come from National Weather Service forecasts and alerts, Storm Prediction Center and Weather Prediction Center outlooks and National Hurricane Center advisories, by fixed rules. They describe the weather, not whether a task is safe: that call stays with your crew, your company procedures and equipment limits.
  • Heat uses the NWS heat index bands (80°F caution, 91°F extreme caution, 103°F danger, 125°F extreme danger). Direct sun can add up to 15°F.
  • Wind is the forecast sustained wind; gusts run higher, and wind up high runs stronger than at the ground.
  • Lightning comes from thunderstorm forecasts and outlooks. Live lightning strikes are not included.
  • Dryness compares rain at the nearest NOAA station with its 1991-2020 normal. It is not the U.S. Drought Monitor (droughtmonitor.unl.edu), which is the official drought map.
  • Hover or tap a level to see why it was set.

Data: NOAA National Weather Service, Storm Prediction Center, Weather Prediction Center, National Hurricane Center; HRRR model winds. Levels are worked out by fixed rules and describe the weather, not whether work is safe.
